Choose a helmet by measuring your head, matching the size range and checking for a safety label such as CPSC. Add gloves that cushion the palm and knuckles, and check the size chart. Replace a helmet after a crash.
Measure first
Measure around the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows, and compare it with the size ranges. A helmet should sit level, snug and low on the forehead, with the chin strap fastened so that only a finger fits under it.
Check the label
Look for a safety standard on the helmet label, such as the U.S. CPSC bicycle helmet standard. Some listings name a standard and others do not, so confirm the label on the helmet you receive.
Ventilation and padding
Vents keep the head cooler on warm commutes, and removable pads are easy to wash. A helmet that you find comfortable is a helmet you will wear.
Gloves
Padded gloves protect the hands from scrapes and reduce vibration. Look for a grippy palm, ventilation and, if you use a phone on the bars, touchscreen fingertips. Check the size chart before ordering.
